Knighthood disgrace

SIR – At the moment the British public are crying out for a sacrificial lamb and a scapegoat to vent their anger and frustration upon.

It would appear that Fred Goodwin fits the bill nicely at the moment.

Mr Goodwin was given a knighthood in 2004 for “services to banking” – such as greed and avarice.

Over the years, some really nice people have been given knighthoods, such as Nicolae Ceausescu for his contribution to torturing and murdering political opponents and fellow countrymen.

Mussolini for his part in the war effort.

Let’s not forget Robert Mugabe. We are all well aware of what a nice chap he is.

It has been suggested that Mr Goodwin has brought the honour of knighthood into disrepute. Wrong. The disrepute stems from this honour being bestowed perpetually on the unworthy and seldom on the worthy.
