Price of democracy

SIR – I find it hard to believe that stopping all police leave, which can be taken later, and shipping in extra from other areas to police the EDL and UAF protests could amount to £500,000, even including the Council’s costs, which I find surprising.

The ordinary wages of the manpower involved would have been paid out, protests or no protests.

I may be wrong, but I believe football clubs etc have to contribute to the policing of their matches, so a bill for any untoward expenses should be sent to the EDL and UAF, who should be barred from any more protests in the future if the bills are not met by them.

This would be a democratic way of implementing the ban a lot of people want.

One of the Asian leaders said in your article (August 30) that democracy can be expensive, and the participating protesters would learn that it can.
