What a response!

SIR – Thank you for your confirmation that, on August 28, “The We Are Bradford/Unite Against Fascism counter-protest on Exchange Square finished its good-natured event with songs and speeches from the organisers”.

This runs counter to the disinformation being spread by some individuals.

As someone who organised some of the music from the main stage, I think we owe a debt of thanks to the rank-and-file police for their friendly and non-intrusive presence, helping people enter and leave the celebration site at will throughout the day.

In the event, only one of our performers found it impossible to get through the police cordon round the city centre.

I was disappointed your photographers did not catch images of performers, or of people dancing. The age range of the dancers was between ten and late-seventies. I know. I was one of them.

The crowd pictures from Crown Exchange Plaza and Infirmary Fields tell their own story.

Though ours was by far the better-attended gathering, it was a pity we divided our forces in this way. It must never be allowed to happen again.

Thank you, Bradford, for your good-natured and peaceful response to racist provocation. And to the sun for shining, of course!

Karl Dallas, Church Green, Bradford
