Isn’t crushing illegal?

SIR – Re your recent article on the crackdown on illegal drivers and the crushing of offending vehicles.

I am surprised that T&A columnist Keith Thomson has not complained about this non-green policy of destroying so many cars, many of which will be in good condition.

But perhaps he feels any means of getting cars off the road is acceptable. The maximum fine, I believe, for driving without insurance is £5,000, and no mention of vehicle confiscation, and the usual fine for driving an untaxed vehicle is a derisory £80.

Isn’t the confiscation and crushing of cars illegal, making the confiscators criminals too?
