SIR – I am one of the gullible imbeciles described by Bryan Owram (T&A, July 1) who will ‘saunter into the polling booths’ to vote Labour at the next election.
To explain why, I cannot do better than quote from a recent speech by Denis McShane, MP for Rotherham.
He reminded his audience that, since 1997, a national minimum wage has been introduced, every school in his constituency has been rebuilt, 13 centres for pre-school children have been opened, waiting lists at the local hospital have vanished, a special NHS facility called Breathe Easy has been opened to help retired miners and steelworkers with respiratory ailments and the number of domestic burglaries has been cut by 40 per cent.
These are achievements which I would not snigger at. I know they have been paid for out of taxation but it is not robbery if they improve the well-being of our fellow citizens.
If Mr Owram disagrees, perhaps he will tell us which of the items mentioned above are unnecessary and represent the proceeds of ‘a terrifying saga of orchestrated greed’ methodically stolen from the people who elected the likes of Mr McShane.
