Money-saving tips

SIR – It would be nice after the next General Election if the MPs elected would look to see how frugally they could run their expenses, instead of as in the past, when it seems to have been the opposite – to claim as much as was available according to the rules.

One expense seemed to stand out to me in the figures for staffing in the T&A, January 2009, for all five Bradford MPs – up from £69,000 to £91,000.

Considering that a locally proficient-in-IT secretary can earn £15,000 to £20,000 in Bradford, according to adverts, and if you add £5,000 London allowance, to be generous, that would allow for a secretary at both ends – London and Bradford – for £50,000.

That was without stationery, postage and other office costs over and above that.
