Kept in the dark

SIR – Regular contributor Gary Lorriman’s letter entitled “Devil’s robes” (T&A, June 10) was a real gem of an example of anti-Catholic prejudice.

It is true there existed (exists) physical and sexual abuse within the Catholic Church. It is not true that everyone was aware of it in the 1940s.

During my Army service (1955-1960) I met, and was impressed by, Christians from various traditions. After personal and guided study, in April, 1959, I opted for the two basic principles of the Christian life. I was then 22.

Leaving the Army in 1961, I joined the Roman Catholic church. For almost 50 years I have remained a member. Information about abuse was very slow to reach the ordinary members, and the 1990s is a more accurate time.

Members find the abuse itself, and the decision of the bishops to remain silent, appalling. They chose to act in ways similar to secular society and organisations; close ranks and protect reputations.

Deception and dishonesty are widespread in our society, especially in financial dealings and sexual relationships. Why is this? The constant flow of psychological sewage from some parts of the media may be a factor.
