SIR – Sincere best wishes to Bradford long-distance swimmer Liane Llewellyn in her attempt to swim the English Channel both ways.

Other Channel facts are listed with the news of Liane’s swim, but missing from the list is the record swim by Barry Watson, of Crossflatts.

On August 16,1964, Barry swam from France to England in the record time of nine hours 35 minutes – a record which he held until 1982.

Yorkshireman and cricketer Fred Trueman was in the Dover area at the time and made a point of meeting Barry there to add his congratulations – one successful Yorkshireman to another.
