SIR – Responding to the Civitas press release reporting there are now 85 Sharia councils operating around Britain, Mohammed Ajeeb said if such bodies were registered there would then be less possibility of an unscrupulous or unqualified individual giving advice that may be inimical to the parties concerned (T&A, June 30).
This is evading the central point of Civitas, which states Islamic law is seriously out of step with trends in Western legislation that derive from the values of the Enlightenment and are inherent in modern codes of human rights.
Muslims argue that since Jews have their own Beth Din courts, which have been in existence for more than 100 years, they should have theirs as well.
But there’s a huge difference between Islam and Judaism. Two centuries of Judeo-Christian struggle has shaped our liberal Western democracy and values on equality and human rights.
This is certainly not the case with Islam which scripturally discriminates against non-Muslims, women, and homosexuals, who should be severely punished according to the Koran.
