SIR - I read with complete astonishment the joint statement from BCR and Yorkshire Forward in response to UKIP's welcome call for a referendum on the Odeon building.

For starters it is certainly "inappropriate", and equally misleading, to state the public has already been consulted on the Odeon issue!

On two occasions we may have been "consulted" - once in October 2004 via T&A coupons and later in May 2006 - but this was about the architectural whatnots of a replacement building, not the existing one.

The clear ignorance of the current owners and our regeneration chiefs concerning the Odeon building and its history is further exhibited within their statement.

To say the Odeon building had closed partly due to being "economically unviable" as a concert venue is a disgraceful joke as it is 40 years since the last live show was played.

As for the Odeon's potential future cinema or bingo demand, neither of these uses have ever been mooted by BORG or their supporters.

We want to see the New Victoria theatre retained for its architectural contribution to the skyline, with the original auditorium space restored for multi-purpose concert and conference purposes.
