Ask the question

11:55am Wednesday 13th June 2007

SIR - I am confident the smile would be wiped off Eric Firth's face if the electorate at large were asked a specific question on the EU.

There would be at least 40 per cent, the figure in the poll referred to by him as being concerned about crime (T&A, June 9), who would want to opt out of the EU.

In fact, more then 50 per cent would be nearer the mark.

It appears Blair/Brown are going to renege on New Labour's commitment to hold a referendum on the constitution thrown out by the French and the Dutch, which Blair says is dead, but which Merkel says has only had the phraseology altered.

Blair has pounced on this to support his lie that no referendum is required. This lame duck PM has no mandate to sign us up to anything the French/German axis throws at him.

The EU, Mr Firth, with all your support, is costing me and the rest of the country, including yourself, £115 million net per day.
