SIR - Everyone agrees that road congestion in Saltaire is a massive problem, but the bypass plan unveiled a in the T&A (March 31) raises serious concerns. Little wonder that ward councillors including myself were not invited to the Action Airedale meeting that reviewed the proposals.
The new road will carve a swathe through the western fringe of Saltaire before plunging underground near the railway station. It will run by Hirst Wood, a much-loved walking area, and continue past the quiet recreation ground near Hirst Lane where residents have plans for a new multi-activity community area.
The road will also be visible from the Leeds-Liverpool canal - one of the jewels in the crown of our world heritage site - and overlook the wonderful recreation grounds managed by Salts Sports Association.
The road will attract increased traffic through the valley, just as the Bingley bypass has done. The resulting noise and airborne pollution will disturb residents of Branksome Drive, Branksome Grove, parts of Hirst Wood and Albert Avenue, as well as people relaxing along the canal, in the woods and on the sports fields.
For all these reasons, the Council should think again.
Councillor Kevin Warnes, Moorhead Terrace, Shipley
