SIR – Re – Sally Clifford article “Dementia’s Victims Need More Support” (T&A, September 16).

How I, and no doubt numerous other carers, must agree with all her, and those of Dr Elizabeth Milwain`s comments. Alzheimer’s and all dementias are health problems. They are presently all incurable, debilitating and “end of life” diseases, yet the Government does not seam to acknowledge this.

As a carer I speak with first-hand experience. My wife Dorothy was officially diagnosed April 2010 (though she had had an assessment during 2004). Dorothy is presently in BRI because of other concerns, and whilst I can but praise the BRI for their attention and care, I would advise that in spite of numerous, beneficial dementia and carers agencies, we carers learn much from our meets at Memory Clubs as organised by Dr Milwain.

Collectively we carers are only too aware that those of us who have saved for retirement are penalised by costs, whilst those who spent and enjoyed their hard-earned wages benefit from Government aid.

Where is the justice?

A carer’s life needs to be experienced to appreciate the utter hardship, the loss of your spouse and feeling of loneliness and helplessness.
