SIR – Your correspondent, David Hornsby’s pre-vote analysis of the underlying reason for the Scottish call for independence (T&A, September 16) hit the mark.

The Scots are sick and tired of hard-hearted English Tories making the four territories of the UK a comfortable home for the top echelons of society at their expense, with their free market lunacy lacking in any conscientious moral judgement.

This leaves poorer sections of society, time and again, picking up the bill for their experiment in social engineering, disenfranchised, unheard, or at worst forgotten.

David Cameron should take no comfort at all that the Scots have voted to stay in the Union.

The result is far from an endorsement of his Government’s policies towards Scotland, or elsewhere for that matter, which he obviously thought a simple Yes/No vote would establish.

The Scots now have an opportunity to make the Union a better, fairer place for themselves as a result of the exercise.

The various regions of England that are more densely populated, Yorkshire and Humberside for example, should sit up, take note and do likewise.
