SIR – Scotland goes to the referendum polls on Thursday with ‘Yes’ supporters hoping for a massive change in the way the country is run.

As Will Hutton explained in The Observer newspaper recently, emphasising the motivating factor of these voters, “the big argument is that Scotland does not need to be permanently yoked to English Toryism’s infatuation with a libertarianism that denies obligations to society and each other...and is the author of the great ‘cashing out’ of the last 30 years. All of our utilities, five million council houses, many of our great companies and swathes of real estate in our cities have been cashed out in the name of market forces, of being open for business and wealth generation. What has been created has been predator capitalism, massive inequality and a society organised to benefit the top one per cent”. They are opposed to all-out, free market capitalism, red in tooth and claw.

The great irony is that there are very many people living the length and breadth of the whole UK who share this view.
