SIR - In relation to your main story on September 11, it is not only local businesses that suffer from the unsightly and dangerous effects of fly tipping.

When this happens in residential areas, it creates opportunities for vandals to set fire to dumped furniture, results in glass-strewn roads and pavements and is a hazard for any children tempted to play in the area.

I do not understand the mentality of the people who do this, when we have a council service that will take away any unwanted items.

I have needed to ring the council several times recently to report fly tipping in an area where flats are being demolished, and I have to say I have been impressed by the speed with which the items have been removed. However, no sooner is the area cleared but more rubbish appears in its place.

I am not sure what the council can do to prevent this, as they cannot patrol all areas 24/7. I agree with your comments that the perpetrators need to be stopped, but surely it is up to the people of Bradford and district, rather than the council, to take some pride in their neighbourhoods and be vigilant in reporting anything that they see.
