SIR - What does the concept of so-called ‘political correctness’ mean? Answer: it refers to language, ideas or policies that address perceived discrimination against social, political or economical groups.

These include those defined by gender, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, age and disability.

When we look back to even just a few decades ago, (supported by archive TV evidence) we see very many examples of people from the above groups being routinely discriminated against.

Today, that situation is much improved because most people accept the universal right of all people to be treated fairly and not routinely or thoughtlessly abused.

The problems in Rotherham are complicated and require detailed investigation before jumping to hasty conclusions.

But, if a person – any person – commits a criminal offence, then they should be stopped and dealt with by the authorities.

That surely fits in with PC, it doesn’t contradict it – everyone treated exactly the same, including under the law, whoever they may be.
