SIR – If you have ever felt our national ‘leaders’ are mainly disconnected and out of touch with life for most ordinary citizens, the answer is... they are.
A new report published by the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission criticised those ‘ruling’ Britain as a cosy club “formed on the playing fields of independent schools” and “finished in Oxbridge’s dreaming spires”.
The authors called for ‘class’ to be given as much priority as gender and ethnicity in a “national mission” to challenge what is seen as a ruling elite.
Suggestions were made in the report which could improve the situation but will any of them be enacted?
Will Parliament, the judiciary, senior officers in the armed forces and even the media ever reflect the real diverse backgrounds of people in this country?
