SIR – I watched the Big Debate on Scottish Independence via TV, I thought it was awful, worse than the rabble emanating from the Commons at PMQs.

To me Alistair Darling won the debate on solid facts, whereas Alex Salmond won on dirty gutter politics.

Now it is up to the canny Scots to make their decision.

Claims of an 80 per cent turnout were made; I feel many women will be disillusioned and fail to register their opinion.

If Scotland follows Salmond, the political implications for the remainder of the UK will be enormous, and raises the question should Scottish constituencies be allowed to participate in the next general election?
