SIR – With reference to your report (T&A, Aug 21) of a demonstration outside McDonald’s Thornbury, we wish to make it clear that this action has not been supported by Bradford Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC).

We fully understand how the protesters feel, given the human suffering and death in Gaza, in particular the shocking number of child and civilian casualties, and the apparent indifference of our government.

BDS (boycott, divestment, sanctions) is a global movement which seeks, through economic means, to pressure the Israeli government to respect international law, end the occupation of Palestine and lift the siege on Gaza. Bradford PSC has defined specific activities, eg demonstrations for two hours, one day a month, at retailers selling goods from illegal Israeli settlements.

While McDonald’s is a powerful symbol of American power and influence, your report makes clear that this is an independent business which does not support Israel, or supply Israeli products.

We have a right to protest, but actions must be legal and peaceful. The present demonstration, however understandable, has caused distress to the business and its neighbours, many of whom would naturally support the Palestinian humanitarian cause.

We would appeal to the protesters to please respect the wishes of the Palestinian people who have called on the world to peacefully, tactfully and non-violently raise their voices against the atrocities committed by Israel.
