SIR – The taxpayer subsidised Parliament’s exclusive bars and restaurants to the tune of £6 million last year (T&A, August 11).

The bill in the House of Commons fell after a series of revenue raising measures but surprise, surprise costs of the House of Lords went up.

The Lib Dems wanted to reform the Lords but because they opposed the boundary changes proposed by the Tories that plan was shelved.

There are 650 elected MPs in the Lower House but the Lords now has 818 unelected members as 22 more ‘worthy’ citizens have just been made peers.

David Cameron has made it clear that he wants to reduce MPs from 650 to 600 but goes on increasing the numbers in the Lords. Keep that in mind when you vote at the next general election.
