SIR – There have been a number of letters recently about people dumping unwanted items outside people’s homes. This has happened to a friend of mine.

About three weeks ago a child’s mattress was dumped at the back of her house in Smith Lane.

Access to the back is from Daisy Hill Back Lane and as it is for private access to her house and the two adjoining cottages the council are not responsible for taking away household items.

My friend is concerned that the longer the mattress remains there other anti-social people will think they can dump rubbish there as well.

My friend and her neighbour are not physically fit enough to remove the mattress and have no transport to do so if they were.

What should happen, of course, is for the person who dumped it to do the right thing and take it to a household waste site as he should have done in the first place.
