SIR – We attended the commemoration of the start of WW1 at the Holy Trinity Church in Low Moor on Sunday, when 139 candles were lit for the local men who died in France and Belgium, including those who died in the Low Moor explosion. It was a very moving service.

But, in my opinion and those of workmates, the service at Westminster Abbey on Monday was a little let-down. We were asked to light a candle, turn off the lights in the house, as a mark of respect but, looking out of the window, many houses were still lit up.

At the service at Westminster, the choir sang hymns we have never heard before. Four guardsmen stood in silence at the tomb of the unknown warrior and I expected to hear the Last Post to be played.

Nothing like at Holy Trinity where the bugle played and eyes watered. One member of the Royal family attended in London, Camilla. The Queen was in Scotland, attended a service there and Harry was in France, as was Charles but, what of all the others, the “hangers on”? As for our PM he was also in France but he could have flown back to attend.
