SIR – People coming off the dole in Bradford will be given free bikes to help them get to their new jobs (T&A, July 21).

Local transport chiefs have been handed a £2.8 million grant from the Government and Metro. West Yorkshire’s transport body said some of the cash would be spent on buying 150 bikes for jobseekers with scores coming to Bradford.

They also confirmed that they would be funding a further 150 reconditioned bikes. All well and good but surely if the yellow cycles handed in after the Tour de France had been distributed instead, the Government’s sustainable transport fund would have saved itself a great deal of money.

Just a thought.
