SIR - If Karl Dallas (T&A, Letters, July 14) rereads my earlier letter, he will see that I was referring to the fate of a None Of The Above candidate who stood against Iain Duncan Smith in 2014 in his Chingford constituency. He did indeed lose his deposit with just over 200 votes.

The point I was trying to make, however, is that one way or another our country has to be governed. If by some strange future stroke of electoral misfortune, NOTA candidates found themselves with a majority, they would have to form an administration.

They would almost immediately be on the receiving end of the same criticism which they had previously been happy to heap on the other political parties in the sure and certain knowledge that they would never have to take responsibility for anything.

After a few years of the inevitable fudge and compromise of practical politics they would find that another party of protest had taken their place. It could be perhaps ABNOTA - that is to say Anyone But None of The Above and the whole dismal cycle of pointless protest would resume; perhaps even led again by Mr Dallas.
