SIR – Sometimes the really important news doesn’t make the front pages of our national newspapers of choice. But, if you can persevere, you can find nuggets of truth worth finding but almost hidden away inside.

South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu has lately been writing his thoughts on climate change and his main aim is to call for an anti-apartheid-type boycott of fossil fuel companies and countries that are failing to take steps to address climate change.

Though he is not a scientific expert, he is well-qualified to comment on the way people behave and he observes that the world has “gone mad” because of its obsession with making money.

He urges people to make a stand because the debate over climate change is over and “we are already feeling the effects”.

He goes on: “We live in a world dominated by greed. We have allowed the interests of capital to outweigh the interests of human beings and our Earth.

“It is clear that those countries and companies primarily responsible for emitting carbon and accelerating climate change are not simply going to give up; they stand to make too much money. People of conscience need to break their ties with corporations financing the injustice of climate change.”
