SIR – In recent months I have followed with interest the developments in Eccleshill regarding Marshalls’ plans to build 600 houses on green field and part council lands.
Indeed, I have attended some meetings on the matter, made objections to the planning department and collected objections from family and friends.
Through all this, it appears that the Liberal Democrat party have been valiantly organising objections for the development (while they are doing nothing more than fulfiling the duties they are expected to do as councillors).
Imagine my surprise then, when in a chance meeting with one of our local councillors Anne Wallace, I was told that the Liberal Democrats were actually responsible for handing over the land in the first place when she said something along the lines of: “If we knew this was going to happen, we wouldn’t have given them the land!”
Given that the ward until 2011 had three Lib Dem councillors and has only acquired a Labour councillor in 2011 (and who, because she lives near the quarry area, is legally restricted from being involved in developments), who is actually responsible for so setting the wheels in motion for handing over the Council land?
