SIR – I was pleased to see that in the T&A (November 17) you published, as your picture of the week, a photograph of Griff Rhys Jones speaking at the launch of BradfordOne.

At the launch, Griff eloquently outlined why a city centre needs more than offices and shops, important as these undoubtedly are. For a city to have a real heart and soul it must also have facilities which cater for people’s cultural, recreational and spiritual needs.

BradfordOne’s vision could fit this bill very well; it is of a restored Odeon, owned by the community and containing a concert venue, retail outlets, bars, restaurants, and so on.

Griff, as president of Civic Voice, speaks for hundreds of civic societies, all of which are attempting to improve the quality of life in towns and cities throughout the country.

Bradford Civic Society is wholeheartedly supportive of BradfordOne. I hope other organisations and businesses in Bradford and beyond will also get behind BradfordOne, so that at last the Odeon can be developed in a way which would truly enhance our city.
