The thieves who have taken lead from a church have shamed themselves.
Surely everyone knows that there are certain buildings which hold a special place in people’s hearts, and that uppermost among these are places of worship.
To steal from churches is, of course, a crime, but it is also deeply hurtful to those who use and cherish them.
In many cases, these buildings also have considerable historical and aesthetic worth and, as such, are also held in great affection by the surrounding community at large.
They may not be regular churchgoers, but they can still enjoy the presence of such buildings in their neighbourhood and will, no doubt, be angry if they are damaged.
After all, it can be a challenge just maintaining them in a good state of repair.
In addition, the crooks have left the church with a considerable bill – something that may be covered by insurance but which could increase annual premiums.
There is obviously no point appealing to the consciences of those behind this crime, as they plainly have none – but we hope a call for witnesses and for local people to be vigilant is heeded.
And we also ask that anyone invited to purchase lead makes sure it comes from a legitimate source. After all, if the thieves cannot sell it, they will not steal it.
