Public concern over knife-crime has undoubtedly been fuelled by some shocking incidents which have made headlines across the country.
And while it must be remembered that such attacks are far from an everyday occurrence, their concerns are still valid.
For not only are these crimes sickening in themselves, but they also create a climate of fear which envelops us all.
What parent of a teenager, for example, has not worried about the safety of their child as they step out of the front door?
So when people who have used knives to maim or kill appear in court, the public expect to see them locked up for a considerable time.
Not only does this take knife-wielding thugs off the streets, but it also acts as a deterrent to anyone contemplating carrying a blade.
The jail term given to Mohammed Ali, who almost cut through the hand of his victim, will be welcome.
The attack was so brutal that the court heard the hand was only saved through the skill and stoicism of the surgeons.
It will come as little surprise to most readers to learn that Ali was involved in drugs.
The fact that he was on bail while he committed this attack will also not surprise many, though it may dismay them.
What we can be sure of is that Ali will be off the streets for some time – although sadly probably not the full six years he received yesterday.
