Keeping the regeneration ball rolling

With the country still in recession, it is understandable – if frustrating – that a number of high-profile private-sector regeneration projects are stalled or worse.

But while we wait for better times to return, progress can still be made.

Firstly, it is heartening that some developers are still confident enough and able to push ahead with their schemes – the welcome sight of cranes on Bradford’s skyline is evidence of that.

These, though, remain the exception at present.

So we must look to the public sector to keep the ball rolling, ensuring the city is best-placed to make the most of the recovery when it happens while giving existing businesses a timely boost.

We have been calling for this sort of action for some time and it seems the powers that be also believe it is the way forward – as shown by the ongoing overhaul of some of Bradford’s pedestrianised areas.

But although this work is much-needed, it could not be classed as one of the city’s biggest projects.

That is not the case with the City Park, however.

And here, too, it seems our calls may be answered, with more progress being made, including all the money being “identified”.

That sounds good, but when we hear the din of construction work under way – now that will be music to our ears.
