RECYCLING has long since left the domain of the “do-gooder” and entered the list of things we should all be doing, all the time, with barely a second thought.

Waste, and the disposal of it, remains a major issue and we must all do our bit to ensure that rubbish is disposed of properly and materials that can be recycled and re-used are sorted and collected.

Most households today have two or three bins for the sorting of rubbish but it seems that Bradford as a district has some way to go when compared to other areas in reducing the waste generated by homes.

For those of us still sceptical about recycling, it is the job of Bradford Council to not only persuade us that it is the right thing to do but to make it as easy as possible for people to sort and dispose of their waste adequately.

Homeowners pay their Council Tax and expect rubbish collection to be a major part of the local authority’s service. Rubbish collections must be frequent and dependable and every effort must be made to provide the right sort of bins for all properties.

One idea from the Council is to have teams of “community champions” who will be asked to “encourage” households to be more friendly towards the environment.

This might seem a nice idea in principal but in practice there may be many who object to feeling as though their garbage is being monitored and that they might be subject to a “ticking off” from an overly enthusiastic or officious neighbour.

The key to a successful recycling campaign is to make it as easy and fuss free as possible so it becomes second nature for everybody.
