It has come as no surprise to some of those polled for their opinions in today’s Telegraph & Argus on the survey which shows Bradford has the highest level of disqualified drivers in the country.

Some people are of the opinion that you only have to get behind a wheel on the district’s roads to see examples of shocking driving and road-use on any day of the week.

It is certainly true that more people than anyone would like seem to have a flagrant disregard for the rules of the road and the safety of other people.

That can probably be said of any large metropolitan area, but this latest survey by a hire car company does seem to show that although Bradford doesn’t have the highest number of disqualified drivers in the country, it is certainly the worst when expressed as a percentage of the licence holders in the city.

The sort of bad driving which leads to the imposition of penalty points to the degree that drivers lose their licences and are disqualified is not just about being a nuisance to other road users.

It is about driving dangerously, and that can – and all too often does – lead to tragedy.

As our roads get busier and busier with more and more traffic, the problem is only going to get worse, not better.

Those who drive in this unacceptable manner persistently can expect to lose their licences and be prosecuted for the more serious offences, but there evidently needs to be a more stringent education process – or maybe tougher driving tests – to weed out the bad drivers from getting their licences in the first place.
