It is frustrating in the extreme that the National Media Museum appears to be on the verge of a fresh funding crisis just months after ministers declared it had been saved.

A huge campaign by the people of Bradford, supported by the Telegraph & Argus, Bradford Council, local MPs and many others – including a petition with more than 45,000 signatures on it – led to guarantees being given about its future Now, though, it appears that a much bigger revenue shortfall than anticipated has led to fears that it could again be in jeopardy, with an urgent appeal going to Culture Minister Ed Vaizey to help safeguard its future.

As we said at the time of Mr Vaizey’s original pledges on the museum, in July last year, his words and subsequent visit to the city to meet with the key players involved must be backed up by action.

And he now has a duty to everyone who stood up to protect the jewel in Bradford’s crown to ensure that those promises are fulfilled.

We cannot have a situation where the media museum lurches from one financial crisis to another, forever threatened with uncertainty.

It is not fair on the people of Bradford who cherish this facility and it is not fair on those whose livelihood depends on it.

Mr Vaizey must now show leadership and ensure that all parties involved, particularly the Science Museum Group, which the National Media Museum is part of, Bradford Council, and the Government work together to find a way to not only guarantee the future of the museum but to give it a new lease of life that will ensure it will not constantly be blighted by closure fears.
