It is a cause for concern that almost 30 per cent of women missed scheduled breast screening appointments last year.

These appointments can be life-saving, and it is no exaggeration to say that those in the targeted groups who fail to attend are effectively putting themselves at risk.

Breast screening is estimated to save hundreds of lives every year, and it is vital that anyone asked to attend takes up the opportunity.

Some may be concerned about the intimate and intrusive nature of the process, and there obviously will be an element of discomfort for the patient, that is unavoidable.

But anyone with real concerns should contact the screening unit and they will be able to reassure them about how the screening is conducted.

There has also been some fears of over-treatment, where surgical procedures have been carried out that may not have been completely necessary.

But not having a screening simply means the woman does not even know whether or not a decision on treatment needs to be made.

The majority of women screened get the all clear in a matter of weeks.

For those unfortunate enough to have a problem uncovered, knowledge of it will at least allow ever-advancing modern medical treatment the opportunity to tackle it.
