There seems to be a lack of joined up thinking from Bradford Council when it comes to a new application to build a £15m academy in East Bowling.

As we report today, the Council’s education department has submitted the plans, but the authority’s own highways agency says they cannot support the proposals in their current form.

It also appears that not only are highways officers opposed to the plans in their current form, they also gave advice prior to the application which was not heeded.

The confusion between the left hand and the right hand at Bradford Council will only further concern those nearby who are strongly objecting to the scheme, saying it is likely to create traffic problems because of the location.

And that confusion is further compounded by the fact that different figures for the number of parking spaces needed are quoted in different parts of the application, ranging from 70 to 93, and estimates for the number of staff vary between 100 and 140.

While there will always be an element of altering plans once they have been submitted by any applicant, there does seem to have been an inordinate lack of communication here.

There are obviously fears among some neighbours that this is not the right spot for the school and the lack of consistency in the plans and the failure to take on board highways advice will not allay those concerns.

Regardless of whether this is the right location for the development or not, it would surely have been better for everyone if there had been a more concerted approach to this in the first place.

What is certain is this lack of a co-ordinated approach will not give any confidence to those who are already opposing it.
