The build-up to bonfire night and the many problems associated with it seem to get worse and worse each year.

As well as anti-social behaviour of the type seen in yesterday’s Telegraph & Argus involving yobs throwing fireworks and bricks at firefighters, there are also issues involving flytipping.

For some, it seems that the bonfire festivities are an excuse to dump trade or domestic waste on top of bonfires.

Bradford Council has joined up with the police, fire service and social landlord Incommunities in a bid to stamp down on this sort of illegal dumping.

As well as being unsightly, fly-tipping can be a hazard if arsonists decide to set it on fire; and if trade waste is dumped on bonfires and set alight, there can be issues with dangerous fumes.

It is sad that an event like bonfire night that should be a celebration for family and friends has become such a drain on public bodies because of the associated problems.

Hopefully this crackdown will discourage the spate of huge piles of rubbish and rubble that appear all over the district in the build up to November 5.

Those found to be fly-tipping, and any other anti-social behaviour associated with bonfire night, must be dealt with severely to discourage others.

And maybe then the festival can be reclaimed for those who respect the law and simply want to enjoy the spectacle.
