Nationalisation is well and truly out of the bag now after the massive action taken to help banks in Britain and around the world. If it is for the good of the country’s economy to take companies into public ownership then it should be done.

The good news is that today the Government has committed a large amount of money to improving the insulation of people’s homes across the country in their latest move to ease the credit crunch - the bad news is that this is a long-term plan and the vulnerable in society like old age pensioners and the poor face a miserable winter trying to pay escalating fuel bills.

It was a relief to see that the Government decided not to go ahead with the proposed badger cull in England that would have seen many thousands of these fantastic and much-loved animals trapped and killed.

TV and movie producers and advertisers are fond of tugging at the heartstrings whenever they can to provoke empathy and mood or evoke ideals and character. Everything is dragooned into selling ideas and products and the natural world, like children, beautiful women and cute animals, is no exception.

As I've said before, I commute to work into Bradford on the train most days and feel lucky and happy that I don't have to struggle in through the rush-hour traffic.

There's been a welcome sight in the last couple of days of yellow penalty notices sprouting on the windscreens of cars parked illegally in the pedestrian zone next to the New Victoria hotel in Bradford city centre, a habit that been allowed to go unpunished for quite a while.
