Wise moves break the zero barrier at last

By Jim Greenhalf »

You really have to be a tree-swinging, knuckle-scraping curmudgeon not to feel even a twinge of admiration for Leeds United.

Five games, five victories, 15 points, the Football League's 15-point penalty kicked into the wide blue yonder, Dennis Wise on course for a second consecutive Manager of the Month award.

West Ham United remained in the Premier League without losing so much as a point in spite of the shady business over the signing of Tevez, and in spite of Sheffield United's aggrieved complaint.

Normal service will be resumed - projecting L…s into a parallel universe - when and if the boys get too big for their expensive boots.

On the subject of football, Gareth Barry's marvellous form for England in the two Euro Cup qualifiers vindicates the high opinion I have had of his play for several years. Alex Ferguson should have signed him long ago.

Although Bradford bloggers bad mouth Manchester United almost as much (I said almost) as the other team, nine miles to the east of Valley Parade, I have followed them since I was a kid watching football at White Hart Lane.

Bobby Charlton was always my hero. Not because of Munich but because he dedicated his individual talent to achieving results for both club and country. I've just read his autobiography. It tails off over the last 30 to 40 pages, but mostly its a lovely, funny, poignant read.
