Last of the international daydreamers

By Dave Barnett »

The life of an international playboy author, such as I lead, is one endless whirl of parties, launches, foreign travel and debauchery.

You also get to meet a lot of interesting people.

*Ouch* That was the missus hitting me on the head and telling me to stop daydreaming and get on with sanding down the patch of filler I put in above the oven about three months ago and haven't yet "got round" to smoothing over.

So, where were we? Ah yes. The life of an unknown author who has had one book published (shameless? moi?) is an endless whirl of all the stuff that happens to everyone else, really.

But you do get to meet a lot of interesting people, or at least have contact with them.

For instance, I got a very nice e-mail this week from a German student who had bought Hinterland, really enjoyed it, and wants to translate it into her mother tongue.

And a chap I don't know took the trouble to send me a postcard here at the T&A from his holidays in Greece saying he had a great time reading the book.

It's very humbling when something you do inspires people to take the time to get in touch. Of course, I also got an e-mail from someone who said simply: "Mr Barnett, you are a TRAITOR."

To who or what, I'm not sure. But any reaction's nice, I suppose.

Wonder if the next book will engender such reactions? Expect me to shamelessly pimp it here sometime soon.
