Cycling in to work the other day, a thought occurred to me.
Not entirely unusal, as the brain still manages to function reasonably well, even when concentrating on all the traffic etc etc that keeps the grey cells pre-occupied.
But there was obviously still a bit of spare capacity in the chill of the early morning as I passed the vast, grey building that is the present Grattan warehouse in Thornton Road.
Should the mail-order company ever close it down because of the present economic mire we find ourselves in, would it not be an ideal, ready-made build-ing for an indoor sports centre?
With a bit of judicious planning, the Council could have a head start on its Olympic-size swimming pool that it is planning on building a few hundred yards nearer the city centre anyway.
And it would be in with a chance of being ready well in time for the 2012 Olympics!
There must be huge car park-ing spaces, and room for any number of sports halls within the cavernous interior of the warehouse.
And, should the worst happen for the Grattan employees, there would be ideal opportunities for them to take up posts in the running of the new sports complex.
Just a thought. One for the Council to pick up and run with should the occasion present itself!
