An uphill struggle to laugh

By Doug Akroyd »

Another "hilarious" youth, trying to make my ribs ache with mirth by shouting something at me from close quarters as I pedal up a hill en route for home.

This time, two of them were crossing the road in front of me with, I thought, plenty of room to spare for us all, especially as I wasn’t going that fast… it being VERY uphill and all.

The first lad actually said: "Sorry, mate" in case, I guess, he had unwittingly slowed my progress further, which I thought was fair enough, and was ready to acknowledge his barely-necessary apology.

Then his ‘mate’ screeched a loud noise close to my ear… nothing rude, just loud… in the hope it might make me wobble and fall.

Unfortunately, he hadn’t reckoned with my fleecy-lined head warmer which severely dulls the hearing, and I ploughed on without even flinching.

It’s my belief that not reacting at all really hacks these ‘jokers’ off a treat.

That’s my theory, anyway, and I’m sticking to it!
