Pipe of peace

By Doug Akroyd »

"It’s alright, Doug, we’re not doing anything dodgy!"

So came the call from over the hedge from our neighbours as I wandered back up the drive.

Intrigued, of course, I had to peek over to see what wasn’t being dodgy, as it were.

And there, looking very content, were our two friendly neighbours sitting out in their garden… gently puffing away on a shisha pipe!

Not the sort of thing you’d expect in the suburbs, but they certainly looked quite at home with what was obviously a new purchase as a birthday treat to one of them.

Made a change, too, from the usual smoke and aroma from barbecues that usual pervade the atmosphere around this time of year… very often from our garden, it has to be said.

Pleasant though the aroma was from the shisha pipe, I still don’t fancy the idea of smoking anything, no matter what the different flavours that apparently are on offer.

But, each to their own, and I left the neighbours to their quiet and contented evening passing the pipe across to each other in a state of apparent bliss.
