Par for the course

A two-year lay off from the fairways seems to have done wonders for my golf.

Never the best, I still enjoyed the occasional foray out on the odd course, despite hefty scores and a fair share of frustration that most, if not all, golfers endure.

But, when the chance came to dust off the irons and Tom Watson woods (there’s a hint of how old the clubs are), it seemed too good a chance to miss.

On the first tee, though, I had the feeling that maybe it hadn’t been such a good idea after all, scudding the ball wide to the right on the fairway, grubbing mostly along the ground.

Nerves, I put it down to… would I still have any of the faint amount of skill I used to have?

But, from there on in, things picked up hugely, and in relaxed manner I fairly sashayed round the course.

At the end of the round, my score was the right side of reasonable (for me), and I still had the same ball I started with… another rare event for me.

One thing, though, that had changed in the intervening years since my last venture on to the swards of green was the increased difficulty of seeing my scorecard.

I don’t think it affected the numbers I actually put down, but I really needed my glasses on to see it clearly… and I had left them in the car.

Fortunately I could still see the ball clearly enough, which was all I thought I would need to do.

And so it seemed...!
