Fare enough

By Doug Akroyd »

In this day and age of spiralling costs of just about everything, restaurants, surely, can’t afford to be taking the mickey out of their customers.
Now I don’t mind paying for a good meal, well presented and an evening of conviviality.
But average fare with a five-star price tag tends to wrankle a bit.
No need to name names, but I was left wondering how a warm salad, a venison pie and not-very-inspiring mountain of mash, two beers and a coffee somehow mounted up to the thick end of £25 on a recent evening out.
Add in the fact that the vegetables were forgotten and then dumped on the table after we’d all finished our main courses, and the taste left in the mouth erred on the side of sour.
Luckily the management didn’t baulk at taking the price of the vegetables off the bill… especially as one of our number had indicated, as they were plonked on the table, that we wouldn’t be paying for them.
If people are struggling to pay their household bills, they’re not going to seek out expensive meals for an average night out.
Just a thought, and one which eating establishment patrons might like to ponder.
