Made up, we were!

By Doug Akroyd »

It’s not somewhere I would have immediately thought of as a place to take a teenage visitor of ours from Germany.
But she wanted to see Liverpool… because she is an avid Beatles fan.
I’m a bit of a fan myself, so off we went to discover together the "place where it all began" .
I was a bit wary of stepping through the doors of The Beatles Story museum, in case it turned out to be a bit manky, as Liverpudlians might say.
But, perhaps viewing it a bit through the eyes of my teenage companion, I was pleasantly surprised.
Not too big and not too detailed, it was an entertaining stroll through the Fab Four’s explosive impact on the world of music and culture in general.
And the other thing I liked about the place was the un-forced friendliness of the staff, chatting away as if they’d known you for ages.
In fact, during our whole day at the heart of the Mersey beat, that chirpy Liverpudlian nature shone through at every turn.
It was very refreshing, for instance to board a tour bus, ask for tickets, and be greeted by the driver with: "Of course, you can, mate. Enjoy your trip with us."
Add to that the magnificent waterfront buildings, the impressive developments going on there, the stunning historic buildings in the city itself, and the ferry ‘cross the Mersey, and it made for a brilliant day out in the European Capital of Culture 2008.
I thoroughly recommend it.
