A good deed undone

By Doug Akroyd »

It was very tempting.
A car park ticket that had obviously been paid for was still sticking out of the multi-storey park pay machine after someone had paid their dues and gone back to their car without it.
But, of course, I couldn't possibly use it to get my own car out - my conscience simply wouldn't allow.
So I did the decent thing and took the ticket to the office booth, and received effusive thanks from one of the car park attendants for handing it in.. I think I counted three 'thank-yous' which was impressive to say it wasn't his ticket I was handing in.
Contrast that with the driver who had actually left the ticket, who happened to pull up in front of me as I made my way to my own car.
"'Ere," he began, leaning out of his window, "d'you see a ticket in that machine, mate?"
"Er, yes," I replied, "I handed it in to the office over there."
"Okay. Right."
And up went the window without a hint of appreciation for my good deed.
Faith in humanity restored one moment, and dinted the next!
