We need to see more of Odeon plan

8:18am Friday 21st November 2008

The decision by the DCMS to reject the appeal against the refusal to grant listed building status to the former Odeon cinema and bingo hall should not really have come as a surprise to anyone. With six previous failed listing attempts, it always seemed like clutching at straws.

Praise is due for schools’ achievement

8:29am Thursday 20th November 2008

Many congratulations to the pupils and staff at all the eight Bradford schools which have been named as “outstanding” by Ofsted inspectors. Some have been awarded that coveted distinction for the second successive year. One of them, Heckmondwike Grammar School, has proved itself outstanding at being outstanding, becoming the only school to have been so honoured for the fourth time.

Checks key to avoiding silent killer

8:41am Wednesday 19th November 2008

Carbon monoxide is silent and invisible – and it’s a killer. That’s the message that Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week is keen to get across. Every year people die as a result of inhaling fumes which have no odour or colour and creep up on them by stealth, giving them a mild headache, making them feel sleepy and finally rendering them unconscious.

Campaign vital to all families

8:36am Thursday 13th November 2008

One of the most important things any parent must do when preparing a child to venture into the wide world alone is teach it how to cross roads safely. The rules are clear enough. Look right, look left, look right again – and if the road is clear in both directions, cross as quickly as possible.

Sick mind behind callous act

8:18am Wednesday 12th November 2008

It is hardly surprising that the “gin trap” has been illegal for many years. This spring-operated device, which is designed to catch an animal by the leg between its jagged jaws, is appallingly cruel. Often the creature dies in agony. Sometimes it escapes, maimed, only to die later of its injuries.
