More than 200 people attended a public meeting in Pool-in-Wharfedale to voice fears about housing proposals.

There was standing room only in the village hall as residents crowded in to hear more about Leeds City Council’s Sites Allocation Plan.

The document, now out to public consultation, contains a list of areas that the council is considering earmarking for development. It includes green-field sites in Pool, Bramhope and Otley in the Leeds North West Outer segment, which is in line to get 1,200 homes including several hundred on Pool’s western edge.

A wide range of concerns were voiced at Wednesday’s meeting.

Pool Parish Council chairman Councillor Hazel Lee listed concerns about the impact of a “50 per cent increase in the number of houses in Pool village”, including: the ability of the roads network to cope; the lack of public transport; the presence of a high pressure gas main; flooding, drainage, and access concerns; and the strain that would be placed on school places and the general infrastructure.
