Lib Dems snatch new Bradford East seat from Labour

David Ward David Ward

Liberal Democrat David Ward has taken the Bradford East seat.

The constituency, formerly Bradford North, was a Labour seat held by Terry Rooney.

The result is one of the last ones to come in nationally, and the latest one from the Bradford district, and came after a recount.

David Ward's majority was just 365. Mr Ward thanked voters for not backing racist parties.

BRADFORD EAST: Raja Hussain (Ind) 375

Neville Poynton (BNP) 1,854

Mohammed Riaz (Con) 10,860

Gerry Robinson (NF) 222

Terry Rooney (Lab) 13,272

Peter Shields (Ind) 237

David Ward (Lib Dem) 13,637

David is the only candidate in this area that regularly sends out news letters to the households. All the others have been non existent untill a month ago.
Well done for your hard work David.
I am not normally a liberal voter but i would rather vote for someone who is working hard all year round, than those that just turn up at voting time.

Totally agree, although I used to bin the newsletters, I was well aware that no other party gave a hoot about things until the campaign began. Not voted for nearly 20 years but glad I did as the majority was so small, it shows each vote CAN make a difference. Lets hope David's voice can be heard in Parliament now, especially as who ever gets in will HAVE to listen to the Lib Dems. Hope for Bradford fingers crossed...!!

I offered to assist the Labour party but was informed that Bradford West was the battleground as it was a marginal seat, as a result there was absolutely nothing put into Bradford East as it was a totally safe seat, doesn't seem to have worked that way. I got no leaflets nae bugger all, Ward deserved it really for his relentless campaigning

Congratz David
It seems Labour underestiated the challange from the Libs and concentrated on the Cons instead
Lots of work to be done so get some rest so we can get on with it
p.s. BNP and National Front were represented within this ward; thankfully both took a spanking
Common Sense prevails!!!!

Gosh, did they think it safe more fools them.
When I say Terry Rooney the response is Terry Who?
Looks like a good well known man won.
Now I'm looking for Council results.

What an excellent result for David Ward. The LDs work hard all year in this constituency (especially hard in BD2/BD10 of the former Bradford North). Congratulations to all the support team who were working their 'socks off' when I visited DW's HQ a fortnight ago. You never see Terry Rooney and his band when it comes to campaigning. He is far too complacent and has rightly got his come- uppance. Well done to all the Lib Dems who voted him out !

GreatGrandDad is so old that he remembers a young David Ward first standing for the Council in Idle nearly 30 years ago.
But, equally, he is so old that he cannot remember the exact year! 1982 at a guess.

Anyway, congratulations, David.
You have served what was the Northernmost part of the (in?)famous Bradford North very well and I am sure you will continue and serve all of the new Bradford East equally well.

If we should elect people on the strength of their campaign rather than their politics then David deserved to win hands down ... he's consistently been communicating to us throughout the last 5 years. And I say that as one of his opposing candidates! (www.votepetershield

So glad that the arrogance of the local Labour campaign & candidate has come unstuck.

The failure of so many that have commented here to recognise the tireless work of Terry Rooney during his time in Parliament, both for his constituency and as Chairman of the Work and Pensions Select Committee, is thoroughly disheartening. Mr Rooney was undoubtedly one of the most just and honorable MPs in the House, who dedicated the last 20 years to improving the lot of those left behind after almost two decades of Tory neglect. Anyone looking at Mr Rooney's Parliamentary career would know that to describe him as "complacent" is grossly inaccurate. Bradford West and the Commons more broadly have lost stellar MP and, for that, I am bitterly disappointed.

Good work on Pensions ???? I don't think so !!! So Mr Rooney was scrutineer as Chairman whilst Gordon Brown was raiding the country's pension schemes, selling 60% of the country's gold reserves at record low prices and allowing the banks free reign to do whatever they liked, thereby devastating the value of many pension pots. Some scrutineer !!!!! The only pension pot Mr Rooney is interested in will be his own generous remuneration as an ex - MP.

Terry Rooney the so called MP, he let down his constituency for 20 years and finally they realised he had to go, what a waste of time,"LOVL"

Well, at long last David Ward has proven that he can beat Labour. (Lib Dems have been saying that as long as I can remember)

Well - you did it. Congratulations. I just hope I feel the same by the time the next Genral Election comes along, let's see how he performs in the role.

Great result and well done David. But...don't forget many of your voters were Tories tactical voting to get Rooney out. If you work for our consituency you met get us as "real" voters next time.

Good luck..

Well done, 365 majority = the number of days you work per year. Perhaps Mr Rooney should have followed your example.

I am not a particular fan of David Ward as i know of some of the local issues on which we don't see eye to eye however Terry Rooney was the only Bradford MP whom you never saw or heard from. Marsha Singh and Gerry Sutcliffe , you always knew they were about doing something .Rooney in my view not an MP but "lord of the manor" thought it was his God given right to rule over his peasants without ever giving anything back.
Fortunately we no longer live in the middle ages and he received the whooping he deserved.
We may get a labour MP at the next election , who knows , but i hope its someone who actually cares about his constituents.

Mostly good points above. I hope David Ward does what he says and fights for BFD East, not just to line his pockets as many seem to. I didn't vote for Ward as I don't agree with much the Lib Dems say, but as a campaigner when it came to Idle & Thackley, Ward was excellant. Lets hope he continues his stellar hardwork in parliment.
